2004 ISI Journal Citation Reports for Communication

The 2004 ISI Rankings were published at the end of June. These rankings showed a marked increase in the impact factor for each of the National Communication Association Journals listed in the Communication area of the Social Science Journal Citation Reports.

Impacts factors allow for comparison between journals of varying sizes and frequencies, although journals with fewer articles published during the year are more prone to fluctuations in impact factor. Furthermore, careful attention should be paid to the many conditions that can influence citation rates such as language, journal history and format, publication schedule and subject speciality.

Nevertheless, some comparison and evaluation of journals based on citations is possible. The impact factor of a journal measures how frequently articles (not including editorials, news items and letters) in the journal are cited in the previous two years - the impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations of articles in 2002 and 2003 by the total number of articles published in the journal in the same period.
